Helmsley
- Reminiscences A super book about Helmsley, written by Isaac Cooper a little over 100 years ago, in which he recounts not only his own memories, but some stories handed down to him and extracts from the diary of John Pape, a noted diarist of the 18th century, giving us a real insight into life in the town from the middle eighteenth up to the late nineteenth centuries. We are fortunate to have been able to copy this book and it is available as either a book or on a CD-Rom. |

Helmsley
Parish Magazines 1872 to 1925 Vicar Gray had an opinion on most things! In his parish magazine he voiced his opinions about local and national events, leaving us with a faithful account of life in Helmsley, during the forty years or so that he was in office there, as well as a reflection of what was going on in England at this time. The result is a fascinating account of his work, together with the notices of baptisms, marriages and burials which took place in the town. Following the death of vicar Charles Norris Gray, in 1813, the magazine is continued by subsequent incumbents. Although not quite so colourful, it is still most informative. This bound collection of the parish magazine, from 1872 to 1925 has some months missing, but most are here. For further information on baptisms, marriages and burials in the parish, the Parish registers are held at the County Record Office at Northallerton. |

Pitfalls
and Possibilities in Family History Research, by Pauline M. Litton If your ancestors are proving elusive and the records are not where you expected, or do not contain the information you anticipated, then Pitfalls and Possibilities is the book for you. Based on a series of articles with the same title published in Family Tree Magazine, updated and expanded, it is not a book on ‘how to do your family tree.’ Rather it suggests unexplored avenues and additional sources which you may not have considered. Possible errors and omissions in original records, transcriptions and indexes – often caused by poor handwriting, inconsistent spelling and regional accents – are described and illustrated. Family history is like a game of snakes and ladders and this book should help you to reach the final square. 290 pages. Illustrated. 170 x 245mm. ISBN: 978-0-9553450-1-2 |
